MBBS INTERNSHIP TIPS!!

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST  OF YOUR INTERNSHIP IN ORDER TO GET THE MAXIMUM BENEFIT OF YOUR FIRST YEAR AS A DOCTOR!!

1. Learn procedures! Don't shy away! Worse case scenario you will fail as a Young doctor. 

It is perfectly normal to not get the procedure right on your first try

Learn important procedures like

CATHETERIZATION - MALE AND FEMALE

FEEDING TUBE INSERTION

ASCITIC TAP

PULMONARY TAP (if lucky)

SUTURES

CUTTING SUTURES

SPINAL ANESTHESIA (if lucky)

TRACHEOSTOMY (if lucky)

NON STRESS TEST 

ASSISTING IN SURGERIES

others: Giving ivs/im injection

drawing samples

putting iv cannula

these are only some of the items i can think of on the top of my mind. Feel free to comment so i can add more!

2. Know that nobody is going to spoon feed you! if you want to learn it bad enough! go after it! wait for it! 

senior docs don't have time to go after interns and teach them what they are not interested in learning. Its your own effort that's going to help you!

3. Be nice to the nurses staff!! They can help a lot if you are nice to them. Don't go in the first day of internship and start treating nurses as your inferior. 

I don't think nurses are ever inferior to doctor. They do their job and we so ours!

In fact as recent graduates they can help us learn the basic protocols!

4. If you are too scared to attempt a procedure! watch a youtube video first! it really helps and you don't feel like you are blindly performing a procedure which you haven't seen. 

5. Start observing which medications doctors give in the treatment chart! You will notice that a lot of the medications which are repeated and learn their doses. 

6. Do enjoy your internship! Get the feel of the hospital. Be professional with patients. Also go for movies and enjoy your time!
