TIPS FOR INTERNSHIP MBBS

MBBS INTERNSHIP TIPS!!

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST  OF YOUR INTERNSHIP IN ORDER TO GET THE MAXIMUM BENEFIT OF YOUR FIRST YEAR AS A DOCTOR!!

1. Learn procedures! Don't shy away! Worse case scenario you will fail as a Young doctor.
It is perfectly normal to not get the procedure right on your first try

Learn important procedures like
CATHETERIZATION - MALE AND FEMALE
FEEDING TUBE INSERTION
ASCITIC TAP
PULMONARY TAP (if lucky)
SUTURES
CUTTING SUTURES
SPINAL ANESTHESIA (if lucky)
TRACHEOSTOMY (if lucky)
NON STRESS TEST
ASSISTING IN SURGERIES

others: Giving ivs/im injection
drawing samples
putting iv cannula

these are only some of the items i can think of on the top of my mind. Feel free to comment so i can add more!

2. Know that nobody is going to spoon feed you! if you want to learn it bad enough! go after it! wait for it!
senior docs don't have time to go after interns and teach them what they are not interested in learning. Its your own effort that's going to help you!

3. Be nice to the nurses staff!! They can help a lot if you are nice to them. Don't go in the first day of internship and start treating nurses as your inferior.

I don't think nurses are ever inferior to doctor. They do their job and we so ours!
In fact as recent graduates they can help us learn the basic protocols!

4. If you are too scared to attempt a procedure! watch a youtube video first! it really helps and you don't feel like you are blindly performing a procedure which you haven't seen.

5. Start observing which medications doctors give in the treatment chart! You will notice that a lot of the medications which are repeated and learn their doses.

6. Do enjoy your internship! Get the feel of the hospital. Be professional with patients. Also go for movies and enjoy your time!

DO'S AND DON'TS OF MEDICAL SCHOOL

Do’s and don’ts of medical school in India

1.    Get a head start on studying if you want to actually understand the concepts. It’s not difficult to grasp the concepts but it’s the vast amount of information that is hard to retain.
If you want to a detailed list of how to study specific subject or go in the right direction. Let me know!
2.    Be social! Seniors help out a lot if you want a quick list of ultra important questions or want to have a good time in a new city!  Either ways they are the go to people who have been through the same experience and will love to help you out!

3.    Don’t become a book worm! As far as I know even the topper of my class wasn’t studying 24*7. Yes! Some students will intimidate you by carrying a book along where ever they go but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s helping them an awful lot. I believe it just adds to the stress.

4.    Vivas are scary. Ask for help from seniors on what they ask. Teachers love to repeat the questions from the topics they taught. Some of the teachers do have a list question which is repeated year after year! Don’t worry everyone gets through them. If you are having a bad day, trust me it will pass.

5.    Start falling in love with medicine. It sounds like a cliché that if one wants to become a great doctor, it’s definitely not all about the money. I know students who weren’t on top of things during the first two years but as soon as they enter the hospital they really fall in love with medicine! As in they love seeing patients and expanding their knowledge. It does help in the long run!

6.    Understand it’s okay to not know everything! Mbbs, whether we like to admit it or not is just a brief introduction to rather in depth subjects. So there is no way of knowing everything unless you are rainman! Teachers might ask you questions which are beyond your scope. That’s okay. Don’t stress and let it go!

7.    Don’t forget to have fun! For most of us when we are done with mbbs what matters most is how to get into pg. We rarely tend to look back on our scores and failures but start to focus on getting a pg seat. In the mist of everything, don’t forget to have fun because these are after all the golden years of life!

8.    Don’t indulge in drinking, smoking or drugs period. If you are trying to experience stuff then at least know that you the self control to bounce back when you need to.

JOURNEY THROUGH MBBS

JOURNEY THROUGH M.B.B.S

For starters, I just finished my M.B.B.S couple of months back. I want to share my experience with students who want to go on this route and with people who are just curious about whats it''s all about - Becoming a doctor in India!

This is going to the brief description of the course including the obstacles and challenges faced by me and my classmates as well.

Well my journey was both sweet and sour. First year of the course is one of important years I believe, That is when students have to acclimitize to the new environment. Nevertheless, its the year when everyone is ready to get kick started to become doctor. Everyone is usually more focused during the first year and eventually some people start drifting away from their goals. I can't say that's the worse thing in the world since that's how most of us learn the major life lessons. However, I would say getting a good grip on the first year subjects anatomy and physiology goes a long way. They make the foundation to a smooth journey ahead. I must add, I am not saying that biochemistry isn't important. But lets face it nobody is gong to remember all those pathways in the long run.

First year is very fast but at the same time its sort of slow. It might be because its hard to forget the memories made specially during this year. The big transition from school to college is difficult to forget for the most of us. Then comes the second year, which is 1.5 years long... Well my biggest mistake was to think "Oh no biggie, i have a lot of time to hit the books." I was wrong. Pathology is a major subject of second year and its best to get a head start rather than waiting till the end. In my opinion the best case scenario will be a student who not only focuses on the second year subjects but also adds medicine with pathology. Worse case scenario would be waiting till the end to open books!! Well this is also the year when students start planning trips and enjoying college life. Have fun but don't over indulge to a point that you can't come back.

Third year is the easiest year I think. But also because I studied decently throughout the year and its very feasible. The holy grail of M.b.b.s is fourth and final year. Its the hardest I believe. Mostly because practicals weigh just as much as theory, and I was always terrified of vivas. So focus on both theory and practicals. Attend the clinical postings from third year on wards and be well equipped with the history taking skills.

Internship is one year long. That's when most of the students learn the basic procedures and get a good taste of the hospital life specifically being on call or night duties.

I would love to answer any questions!
